Most recently Camp Ravenna was under consideration for major expansion and renovation to serve as the future home of a billion-dollar missile defense system.

Ravenna, Ohio, Attractions

If you visit Ravenna, a can’t-miss landmark you are sure to enjoy is the 1893 150-foot Ravenna flagpole, which sits in front of the Portage County Court House downtown. The flagpole, originally built by the Van Dorn Company of Cleveland, Ohio, is considered a rare example of the use of iron structure developed for the construction of bridges in a monument of civic expression.

Creation of the steel box lattice structure to support the Ravenna flagpole is believed to have been one of the earliest uses of the technology. It is compared to the Eiffel Tower in Paris, erected in 1889, and was one of the tallest flagpoles in the country in the late 19th century. The company that constructed the Ravenna flagpole erected three similar ones in New York State. Only one shorter one still stands in Palmyra, N.Y.

The Ravenna flagpole was dismantled, refurbished and re-erected in 2014 with private donations from all over the world. Today, the U.S. flag that flies 150 feet over downtown Ravenna is always bathed in white light from sunset to sunrise.

A few minutes east of town, West Branch State Park provides a more interactive attraction for residents and visitors. Its 2,650-acre lake with its many forks and coves is extremely popular with fishermen, boaters and swimmers. The park also provides 5,379 acres of meadows and wooded lots for camping, including equestrian camping; horseback riding on 20 miles of bridle trails; hiking; mountain biking; hunting in season; disc golf; and picnicking. In winter, as conditions allow, West Branch is popular for cross-country skiing, ice fishing and ice boating. In addition, extensive snowmobile trails start at the park’s west boat ramp.

Ravenna residents and visitors also enjoy easy access to the Portage Hike and Bike Trail, which runs through town. This well-maintained, partially paved trail connects the communities of Ravenna, Kent and Kent State University to the 32-mile Metroparks Trail in Summit County.
