The legacy of the Packard brothers’ electric company, luxury automobile and other innovations in Northeastern Ohio are documented in the National Packard Museum and are celebrated with the W.D.Packard Music Hall, both in Warren. The museum collects, preserves and exhibits a world class collection of automobiles, artifacts and documents, and hosts educational programs and special events. The theater presents concerts, Broadway touring productions, ballets, children’s programs, and many other programs.
The Sutliff Museum, which is located in the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, features the life and times of the Sutliff family, who were very active in Trumbull County’s abolition movement and played significant roles in the Underground Railroad. As early as 1823, local citizens were helping fugitive slaves escape to the North.
By 1837, Trumbull County had 30 anti-slavery societies with membership totaling close to 1,500. And according to historians, Trumbull County’s 153 miles of escape routes on the Underground Railroad were more than in any other county in Ohio. The Warren-Ashtabula Turnpike, which is known today as State Route 45 (Mahoning Avenue), was the most direct route to Canada. “Stations” were scattered throughout the county and there were 22 official “conductors.” Many of those hiding places are still standing today.
Across from the library and Sutliff Museum stands the 1840 Upton House, the third oldest surviving house on Mahoning Avenue in Warren. It is open to the public and commemorates the life of Harriett Taylor Upton, a key player on America’s women’s suffrage movement.
The Upton House became the temporary home of the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1903, when the organization moved to Warren at Mrs. Upton’s request. In 1905 the headquarters relocated in the west wing of the new Trumbull County Courthouse and remained there until late 1909 when it was moved to New York City.
Women’s Park in Warren’s Historic District is a project of the Harriet Taylor Upton Association. A stone bridge spans a bubbling brook, and walkways and courtyards of inscribed bricks celebrate the lives of the women who have contributed to Warren, Trumbull County and the Western Reserve.
Millionaires Row in the historic district features architecture that was prominent during the Victorian era. These structures, which were once stately homes and mansions, today house businesses, offices and museums. Among them is the Perkins Mansion, which has served as Warren’s City Hall since 1934 and is open for self-guided tours.
Another historic spot in Warren is located at 2487 Parkman Road, where on July 26, 1936, a 6-year-old Neil A. Armstrong took his first airplane ride in a Ford Tri-Motor airplane — a Tin Goose — from Warren Airways located on Parkman Road. The First Flight Lunar Module, a half-scale replica of Apollo 11’s lunar landing module, marks the spot in commemoration of Armstrong’s more famous ride 30 years later.
