HMMM Gives Back: Supporting Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley

HMMM gives back to Mahoning Valley community.

Around 1 in 6 people in the Mahoning Valley go hungry every day. The COVID-19 pandemic has only worsened the problem, as grocery stores have run short of everything from canned goods to chicken breasts.

Fortunately, the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley and its partner agencies are working hard to help the local communities hit hard by the coronavirus. When the pandemic struck, the Food Bank saw a 30 percent increase in food requests in the tri-county area. By the end of March, the agency had already delivered 41 percent more food than the same time last year. To increase safety measures, member agencies converted their normal operations into drive-thru models to continue providing food and protecting public safety.

Nearly 18,000 people request emergency food assistance in the region each week, according to Second Harvest’s website. Almost 30,000 children in Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull counties are living with food insecurity. Nearly a quarter of the Food Bank’s recipients are senior citizens.

At Heller, Maas, Moro & Magill Co., LPA, we want to help. Our law firm recently donated funds to make 9,000 meals available to children, senior citizens, military veterans, and families in need. But food banks, soup kitchens, food pantries, and other Ohio hunger relief agencies still need assistance.

Here’s how you can help the Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley:

  • Make a monetary donation: Click here to make a financial donation to the Food Bank. Every $1 allows the agency to distribute $11 of food. You can also donate by calling (330) 792-3522.
  • Volunteer: Both individuals and groups can reserve times to help sort and re-pack food. You can call (330) 792-5222 ext. 102 to schedule a shift or fill out an online volunteer memo and mail to Renee Fuller at 2805 Salt Springs Rd., Youngstown Ohio, 44509, or fax (330)792-9665.
