Exercise Your Constitutional Right to Vote. Yes, Your Vote Counts!

April 30, 2016 by Heller, Maas, Moro & Magill Co., L.P.A.

You’ve seen people wearing those little flag stickers on Election Day that say “I Love Voting” or “I Voted Today.” Those tiny stickers represent a very big deal.

We are able to do this—elect our public officials and wear a flag sticker to prove it!—because of the 15th Amendment to the Constitution.  This amendment set into law that “…rights of the citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”

This right is the foundation with which other civil and political rights are founded.  Election day allows you to be part of the political process, and to support the issues that impact your daily life.

Does your vote matter?

The answer is a resounding YES! Voting gives the feeling of freedom and independence by knowing that your voice will be heard.  Going to the polls on Election Day gives you the empowering feeling to stand up for what you believe in.  Elected officials will be nominated for office, and laws will passed each and every Election Day.  Don’t miss out on the opportunity to shape the future of our country.

Will your vote really make a difference?

Again, heck yes! In 1876, one vote gave Rutherford B. Hayes the presidency of the United States of America.  In 1960, John F. Kennedy was elected by one vote per precinct.  In 2000, the difference in the total vote in the state of Florida for President of the United States of America was less than one-half of one percent.  Each and every vote does make a difference.

Educate yourself about the candidates and the laws being voted on before this coming November. Your vote may be the one that elects the next President of the United States. Don’t pass up this privilege and right.
